Apply to host the Cities and Climate Change Science Conference in 2018

10 November 2016

The conference will boost scientific research on the role of cities in combatting climate change to support the implementation of the Paris Agreement, the New Urban Agenda and the SDGs.

At its session in Bangkok on 20 October 2016, the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) announced plans to hold an international Cities and Climate Change Science Conference in the first week of March 2018.

The conference will bring together around 300 academics, scientific bodies and agencies, UN Member States, local and regional governments, and urban practitioners to stimulate scientific research on cities and climate change and provide inputs to upcoming IPCC reports, particularly the Special Report on Cities and Climate Change. The event aims to take stock of existing data and research, identify knowledge and research gaps, identify future research priorities and establish a partnership to gather, assess, analyze and disseminate information  on science-policy-practice linkages.

The conference also seeks to create synergies between the SDGs, Sendai Framework for Disaster Risk Reduction and Habitat III, and will facilitate engagement with Future Earth’s emerging research agenda on cities and sustainable urbanization, currently being built around a growing international network of over 50,000 researchers.

The conference is supported by the #CitiesIPCC group, a diverse coalition of urban and scientific organizations, including C40 Cities, Cities Alliance, ICLEI, Future Earth, SDSN, UCLG, UN-Habitat, UN Environment and WCRP.

The host city will have the opportunity to harness the event to raise awareness of climate change and the role of local government in the achievement of the Paris Agenda.

#CitiesIPCC call on all cities recognized for their climate leadership, particularly those in the Global South, to submit to host the Conference by 31 January 2017.
