27 May 2019 —31 May 2019

Under the theme "Better Quality of Life in Cities and Communities", the first UN-Habitat Universal Assembly will take place in Nairobi, with a clear focus on the implementation of the New Urban Agenda as a way to accelerate the implementation of the SDGs.

The Assembly replaces the biannual Governing Council that is traditionally attended by our constituency. Given the important role that UN Habitat plays as a focal point in the implementation of the New Urban Agenda and in dealing with urban and local government issues in the UN System, the Global Taskforce has closely followed the preparations of the first Habitat Assembly.

The UN Habitat Assembly will host a Local and Regional Governments Forum, that will take place on 29 May 2019 at 18h, bringing together cities, policy-makers and businesses to engage in a dialogue on innovations to implement the New Urban Agenda as an accelerator to achieve the global development agendas, and the SDGs in particular, at the local level.  Our constituency will call for increased dialogue with national governments and the renewed UN-Habitat Governance system.

The Forum will be jointly organized by UN-Habitat and the Global Taskforce of Local and Regional Governments and seeks to play a key role in inspiring local policy makers to engage with the global agendas and provide new ideas for their local implementation, such as the identification of innovative mechanisms of multi-level governance and successful experiences of local actions that are accelerating the implementation of the New Urban Agenda and Agenda 2030.
