Roundtable on Localizing the SDGs

21 November 2017 —10 February 2024

On 21 November 2017, in the framework of the Commonwealth Local Government Conference, in Valletta, Malta, the Commonwealth Local Government Forum and Platforma, on behalf of the Global Taskforce, and in collaboration with UN Habitat and UNDP, will organize a political roundtable on localizing the SDGs.

Background
The event aims to emphasize the importance of effective decentralization as part of the ‘enabling environment’ to achieve the SDGs. It will tackle legal or financial reforms but will also focus on building mutual trust between the different levels of government.

Objectives of the political roundtable
The political roundtable will convene Mayors and Ministers to discuss the necessary institutional arrangements needed for a more integrated, inclusive and sustainable territorial development.

Expected outcomes
The event should inform the GTF agenda aiming at promoting multilevel governance and the development of dialogue mechanism which will be instrumental to implement the New Urban Agenda and achieve the SDGs.

The roundtable will produce an outcome statement to support local government engagement in the run up to the SDG 11 reporting in 2018.
