The 22nd Conference of Parties to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (COP22) took place in Marrakech from 7 to 18 of November 2016, with the mandate to decide on the action agenda to implement the Paris Agreements which entered into force on 4 November.
Local and regional government activities in the framework of the COP22
On 14 November, local and regional governments met in Marrakech, Morocco, for the Climate Summit for Local and Regional Leaders, where they approved the “Marrakech Roadmap for Action”.
The conference will boost scientific research on the role of cities in combatting climate change to support the implementation of the Paris Agreement, the New Urban Agenda and the SDGs.
At its session in Bangkok on 20 October 2016, the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) announced plans to hold an international Cities and Climate Change Science Conference in the first week of March 2018.
Local and regional government networks of the Global Taskforce and their members will showcase the work that cities and regions are doing to tackle climate change, and continue their global advocacy for improved local climate financing.

Global Taskforce networks UCLG, ICLEI and C40 Cities are mobilizing their members and partners to advocate for the Special Report, which they say would be “a milestone in IPCC history.”
From April 11-13, the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) will meet in Nairobi to decide on its work programme and select from a shortlist of Special Reports on climate change. Among the shortlisted reports is the proposal for a Special Report on Cities and Climate Change, submitted by the South African government.
