As the international community enters the final stretch of the 2030 Agenda, local and regional governments gathered during the 2026 High-Level Political Forum (HLPF, 7-16 July, New York) to reaffirm that achieving sustainable development will depend on empowering territories as spaces where global commitments become everyday realities.

New York, July 16, 2025 – As the world enters the final five-year to achieve the 2030 Agenda, over 30 local and regional governments gathered within the Global Taskforce of Local and Regional Governments, together with UN agencies, civil society organizations, and national governments representatives gathered at the United Nations to call on themselves as partners for the transformation of the multilateral system.

Local and regional governments driving gender equality, sustainability of marine ecosystems, decent work and health, wellbeing and care!

The United Nations High-Level Political Forum (HLPF) will be held from Monday, July 8 to Wednesday, July 17, 2024, under the theme "Reinforcing the 2030 Agenda and eradicating poverty in times of multiple crises: the effective delivery of sustainable, resilient and innovative solutions."

Since 2017, the Global Taskforce of Local and Regional Governments has facilitated a report to the High-Level Political Forum of the United Nations (HLPF) on the role of local and regional governments (LRGs) in the localization of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). The next report will be presented in July 2023.
